FAQ

Common questions

Is there a fixed amount of mahr?

There is no fixed maximum. Schools differ on the minimum. The amount is agreed between the families and belongs to the bride.

Can the bride add conditions to the Nikahnama?

Many scholars allow lawful conditions to be written in. A scholar will explain what your school accepts.

Is this the same as counselling?

No. This is about the contract. For relationship support, see Islamic marriage counselling.

Scholar review. This guide is general guidance, written to be accepted by the major schools, with differences noted where they matter. It is being reviewed by Sukon’s Scholar panel. For a question about your own situation, ask a verified scholar — always free.
