1. Children are a trust

“Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 893

Children are an amanah from Allah. Our job is to love them, protect them, provide for them, and help them know and love Allah.

2. Welcoming a newborn

  • Thank Allah and share the good news.
  • Tahneek: the Prophet ﷺ softened a date and rubbed it on a newborn’s palate (Sahih al-Bukhari 5467).
  • Give a good name with a beautiful meaning.
  • Aqiqah on the seventh day (or later), shaving the head and giving charity.
  • Many families say the Adhan softly in the baby’s right ear.

3. Mercy before everything

The Prophet ﷺ kissed his grandson Al-Hasan. A man said, “I have ten children and have never kissed any of them.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 5997
  • Hug your children, play with them, listen to them.
  • Correct the behaviour, not the child’s worth. Never humiliate.
  • Be fair between children in gifts and attention: “Fear Allah and be just between your children” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2587).

4. Teaching Salah and the Quran

“Teach your children to pray when they are seven years old.” — Sunan Abu Dawud 494
  • Pray where they can see you. Children copy what they see.
  • Start with short surahs: Al-Fatihah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas.
  • Make the masjid a happy place.
  • Find a good Quran teacher early, and praise every small step.

5. Screens, friends and the teenage years

  • Agree family rules for phones and screens — times, places and content — and follow them yourself.
  • Know your children’s friends and welcome them home.
  • Talk openly about growing up, modesty and the body, in an age-appropriate way.
  • Teens need more listening, less lecturing. Ask their views.
  • Give responsibility step by step: chores, money, decisions.

6. Dua for your children

For righteous offspring

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Rabbi hab li minas-salihin

My Lord, grant me righteous children.

Quran, Surah As-Saffat 37:100

For prayer in the family

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي

Rabbij’alni muqimas-salati wa min dhurriyyati

My Lord, make me one who establishes prayer, and from my descendants.

Quran, Surah Ibrahim 14:40
