The Sukon Jumu‘ah Guide
Friday, the best day of the week — its virtues, Sunnahs and the Friday prayer
1. Why Friday is special
Friday is a weekly gathering for the whole community — a day of worship, cleanliness, charity and family. It is called a weekly Eid for the believers (Sunan Ibn Majah 1098).
2. The Sunnahs of Friday
- Take a bath (ghusl) before the prayer — “When one of you comes to Jumu‘ah, let him take a bath” (Sahih al-Bukhari 877).
- Wear clean, good clothes; men may use perfume.
- Go early to the masjid and sit near the front.
- Recite Surah Al-Kahf (Surah 18) during the day.
- Send abundant salawat on the Prophet ﷺ: “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad”.
- Make much dua, especially in the last hour before Maghrib.
- Give some charity, visit family and the sick.
3. The Friday prayer
Jumu‘ah prayer replaces Dhuhr on Friday. It is obligatory for adult, healthy, resident Muslim men; women, travellers and the sick may attend, and if they do not, they pray Dhuhr at home.
- The adhan is given and the imam delivers the khutbah (sermon) in two parts, sitting briefly between them.
- Listen in silence — do not talk, use the phone or play with things during the khutbah.
- The imam leads two rak‘ahs aloud.
- Many people pray Sunnah prayers before and after; follow the practice of your masjid and school.
If you arrive during the khutbah, pray two short rak‘ahs (tahiyyat al-masjid) and then sit and listen, as many scholars teach.
4. A Friday checklist
| Time | Do this |
|---|---|
| Thursday night | Cut nails, prepare clean clothes, plan your Friday dua list |
| Morning | Ghusl, Surah Al-Kahf, salawat |
| Before Dhuhr | Go early, sit close, read Quran or make dhikr |
| Khutbah | Listen silently, phone away |
| Afternoon | Family time, charity, visit someone |
| Last hour before Maghrib | Dua, dua, dua |
Let each Friday be a weekly reset: leave last week’s mistakes behind with istighfar and begin the new week with a plan for good.
