The 99 Names of Allah
Al-Asma’ al-Husna — meanings, short reflections and how to live by them
Contents
1. Knowing Allah through His Names
The Names of Allah are not just words to memorise. Each Name opens a window onto who Allah is — the Most Merciful, the Provider, the Forgiving, the Wise. When we know Him, we love Him; when we love Him, we obey Him with joy.
Scholars explain that “learning” the Names means three things: knowing their meaning, calling on Allah by them in dua, and letting them shape our character — being merciful because He is Ar-Rahim, forgiving because He is Al-Ghafur.

3. Ten Names to live by every day
- Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim — begin every task with “Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim” and show mercy to every creature.
- Ar-Razzaq — work hard, but remember that provision comes from Allah; never earn it through haram.
- Al-Ghafur, At-Tawwab — never despair of forgiveness; turn back to Allah after every mistake (Quran 39:53).
- As-Sami‘, Al-Basir — Allah hears every whisper and sees every hidden deed; let that make you sincere.
- Al-Wakil — after doing your best, leave the result to Allah: “Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal-wakil” (Quran 3:173).
- Al-Wadud — Allah loves His servants; love people for His sake.
- Al-Hakim — when you do not understand a test, trust that Allah is All-Wise.
- As-Sabur — be patient, because the Most Patient is with the patient (Quran 2:153).
- Al-Hadi — ask Allah for guidance in every prayer: “Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim” (Quran 1:6).
- As-Salam — be a source of peace in your home and community.
4. Calling on Allah by His Names
Match the Name to your need. For forgiveness: “Ya Ghafur, ighfir li” — O All-Forgiving, forgive me. For provision: “Ya Razzaq, urzuqni” — O Provider, provide for me. For healing: “Allahumma Rabban-nas, adhhibil-ba’s, ishfi antash-Shafi” — O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal, You are the Healer (Sahih al-Bukhari 5743).
A beautiful family habit: learn one Name each day after Fajr, discuss its meaning at dinner, and make dua by it before sleep. In about three months your family will know all ninety-nine.
