The Sunnah of Friday: 8 simple things to do every Jumu’ah
By Team Sukon
Friday is the best day of the week for Muslims. Allah says: “O you who believe, when the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade” (Quran 62:9). Here are eight simple Sunnah acts to make every Jumu’ah special.
1. Take a bath (ghusl)
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged a full bath on Friday before coming to the prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 877).
2. Wear your best clean clothes and perfume
Men are encouraged to wear clean clothes, use miswak or brush their teeth, and use perfume if they have it (Sahih al-Bukhari 883).
3. Go to the masjid early
The earlier you arrive, the greater the reward — the Prophet ﷺ compared the earliest arrivals to someone who offers a camel in charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 881).
4. Listen to the khutbah in silence
Do not talk during the sermon — even telling someone else to be quiet counts as idle talk (Sahih al-Bukhari 934). Keep your phone away.
5. Read Surah Al-Kahf
Many scholars recommend reading Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, based on narrations such as the one in al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim about light between two Fridays. Read Surah Al-Kahf on Sukon in your language.
6. Send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ often
The Prophet ﷺ told us to send many blessings on him on Friday (Sunan Abi Dawud 1047). Even a few minutes of “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad” after Asr is a beautiful habit.
7. Look for the hour when duas are answered
There is an hour on Friday when a Muslim’s dua is accepted (Sahih al-Bukhari 935). Many scholars say to seek it in the last hour before Maghrib.
8. Give a little Sadaqah
Set aside a small, regular Friday Sadaqah. Small deeds done regularly are the most beloved to Allah (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464).
