Teaching children to pray: a gentle plan from age 7
By Team Sukon
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Teach your children to pray when they are seven” (Sunan Abi Dawud 494; Jami at-Tirmidhi 407). The emphasis is on teaching — patiently, lovingly and by example.
Before seven: let them watch and join
Children copy what they see. Pray where they can see you, let them stand beside you and praise them when they do. Teach Surah Al-Fatihah and the short surahs through play — Sukon Kids has free practice.
Age 7: one prayer at a time
Start with one prayer a day, such as Maghrib, when the family is at home. After a month, add Isha, then Fajr on weekends. Keep a simple chart on the wall or use the Salah tracker together.
Teach wudu step by step
Show each step slowly and let them do it while you watch. Our How to pray guide explains each step with pictures and the words to say.
Explain the why
Tell them Salah is our meeting with Allah five times a day, and that the first thing we will be asked about on the Day of Judgement is our prayer (Sunan an-Nasa’i 465). Children rise to meaning.
Be gentle and consistent
Never shame a child about prayer. Allah describes the believers’ dua: “Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and children the coolness of our eyes” (Quran 25:74). Make that your dua every day.
